Appalachian Hiking Day Camp

It is amazing what we can learn about the world around us from a walk in the woods, and maybe more importantly what we can learn about ourselves.
____________
We will take campers on a series of adventures along some of the most scenic trails in Virginia. This is an opportunity for campers to get out in the woods and challenge themselves in the outdoors through a series of easy to moderate hikes. If you are wondering if your camper can do it. The answer is yes! And we think they will love it!

Camp Itinerary: We had to cut this years camp a day short to accomodate the 4th of July Holiday. We will take one of these days off depending on the group.

Monday we begin the week by climbing Little Devil's Staircase in the Shenandoah NP north district. We follow Keyser Run up the ridge through a gorge and then back down past the old Bolen homestead site complete with a family graveyard.  Difficulty: Moderate

Tuesday we travel back to Shenandoah National Park and hike along the ridge from Skyland up to the park's highest peak, Hawksbill Mountain. This hike has amazing views of the valley, a look at the natural history of the region through an old hemlock forest, and challenging geological features to explore and hike through.  Difficulty: Moderate

Wednesday we hike along the Potomac at Difficult Run and Great Falls. We'll visit waterfalls, Mather Gorge, and rock scramble along the billy goat trail.  Difficulty: Easy

Thursday we'll tackle one of Shenandoah's most popular hikes: Old Rag. Depending on the capabilities of the group, we'll attack the ridge trail or ascend if from the back side. A beautiful, challenging hike complete with amazing views and deep woods.  Difficulty: Moderate to Hard

Friday we cap off the week with a hike up Cedar Run to a waterfall complete with natural slide and swimming hole! It's a great way to cap off a hot summer week.  Difficulty: Moderate
